Under the Oak Tree Vol. 1 by Suji KimPage Count: 471This was clearly a bad month for me reading-wise, and I was so let down by this book. I'm not going to beat around the bush here, this was just a complete cash grab and I fell for it. If you aren't aware, this novel is based on a webtoon of the same name by the same author. It was a solid concept, girl marrys guy and they fall in love while she finds her strengths and confidence and the characters are pretty charming (ok Riftan is kinda a weirdo) but the webtoon features a webtoons standard pitfalls. The story is slow for no reason, several episodes where nothing happends, and then one episode where a million things happen, the world building seems to be an after thought/happen as its written, etc. I thought that the novel would fix all these issues, that the author would take the time to repace the story as she was writing to book version, and remove the filler episodes. She did none of that, this is just a play by play on the webtoon, with more descriptions since there are no pictures now. I feel upset because I wanted to support the author and I was expected her to actually improve the story in this new format (otherwise what is the point of the novel if I am already paying to read the webtoon?) and she clearly didn't. |
